Cinque Terre and Lake Como

Which town should we choose to stay in during our 4-5 day trip to Cinque Terre?
The same question for Lake Como. Are there excursions from Lake Como to Switzerland?
Thanks so much.

I think either Monterosso or Vernazza in CT. I am glad I stayed in Monterosso but probably would have been happy in either. Monterosso is just bigger, with more options for dining, drinks, etc.

loved Monterosso. Lots of dining options. Be sure to try fried anchovies!

Tonia,

Each of the towns in the C.T. have their own "charms". Corniglia is probably not as popular as it's located on top of a cliff.

If you want more conventional lodgings and restaurants, Monterosso is a good choice, as it's the largest of the five villages and has the best beach.

Vernazza, Manarola or Riomaggiore are also good choices, depending on what type of "atmosphere" you're looking for. You might check your local book stores to see if you can find a copy of the Italy Guidebook, as there's LOTS of information there including lodging suggestions.

For Lago di Como, I'd highly recommend Varenna which is a mid-lake town, and only about one hour from Milan by train. There's a good range of accommodations there, and some that you could look at are Albergo Olivedo, Albergo Milano or Hotel Royal Victoria (which is somewhat "high end" but beautiful!).

Excursions to Switzerland from Varenna would not be as easy as from Stresa, which is located on Lago Maggiore. One great day trip from Stresa is travel via the scenic Cento Valli railway to Locarno, returning via Ferry. It's a long day but a wonderful trip.
