Cinque Terre and Amalfi in one trip bad idea?

Do you think it is feasible to visit Cinque Terre and the Amalfi coast in the same 10 day trip?

It would depend on time of year, other plans in the itinerary, and flights, but I mostly just see it as redundant due to the fact that both are coastal beauty spots. Both also tend to take a long time to get to and from.

Feasible? Sure. A good idea? No.

Ten days is not really a lot of time, especially when you start factoring in travel time, etc. Are you counting the days you arrive or depart in that ten? You’d lose a whole day just traveling between them.

Plus, there’s basic overlap. They’re both beautiful coastal areas. Focus on one and allow yourself time to relax and fully enjoy the experience. You could easily spend ten days around Amalfi Coast and not run out of things to do. Think about which one is more attractive to you and why, and what makes sense to you logistically. Then pick one and enjoy.

I agree, it depends on a lot of other details. On a 10 day trip many people would limit themselves to 3 destinations. For example, if you were to fly round trip to Rome, you could go directly to Cinque Terre, then to Amalfi Coast and finish with time in Rome. The big downside of that itinerary is that you would have about a 6 hour train trip on your day of arrival and about an 8 hours of travel when you transfer from Cinque Terre to Amalfi Coast. Or, if you were to fly open jaws into Pisa and out of Naples, that would reduce some of the travel time but presents other challenges such as very early flights home. I would choose one or the other unless you want to make these 2 destinations the primary focus of your trip.

With ten nights three stops would be appropriate. What exactly is your plan? How are you getting in and out of the country, flying?

If these are your only 2 considerations, then 10 days is all I would want....assuming the 10 days are on the ground in Italy, not including flight dates. Fly into Naples and out of Milan or Florence. Advice seems to be Rome, but not every city had cheap direct flights into Rome and sometimes a connecting flight in Italy cuts down on the logistical hassle of getting to where you really want to go. You can take a ferry to Sorrento from Naples and you will be on the Amalfi Coast - done. Beats the trains and connections from Rome to 'whereever'. You may even want to consider flying from Naples to Florence in order to then train to Cinque Terre as your alternative is mulitiple trains and numerous hours. It depends on what home base you want to use for Amalfi. Milan is a distance from Florence, but if pricing is significant, and you do this at the end of your trip, it would be easier as there isn't jet lag and culture shock to deal with.

Train time Naples to Florence is 2:52; one does not fly. All this is useless speculation w/o a plan from the OP.

Louise, we really need more info, please, before being able to weigh yea or nay.

What time of year?
How many nights ON THE GROUND will you have in Italy
Where else are you going in Italy?
How many people are you traveling with and how mobile is everyone?
What are you MOST interested in seeing in Italy?

I'd say doing both is overkill for a 10 day trip, and if it comes down to one versus the other, it'll depend on where else you're going; which one makes the most logistical sense when combined with those areas.
