Cinque Terre alternative?

We've been to Italy four times and are going back next year. The first time we went (2003) we spent a couple of nights in September in Vernazza in the CT. Now I have a couple of friends who want recommendations on where to go in Italy for their first big trip to that country, and I know they're going to want to know if the CT are still worth going to, or have they been so overwhelmed by crowds as to make them worth avoiding. They'll be going in spring of next year.

I would love to hear some alternate suggestions that I could give them that might be similar to the CT, but not as overwhelmed by tourists. Any ideas?

Thanks.

While the Cinque Terre is certainly more crowded now than in years past, it's still a very special place and worth visiting. I think a comparable region would be the Amalfi Coast, although it's probably just as crowded. It would probably depend on the rest of their itinerary since the Amalfi Coast is pretty far south, but if they plan on visiting Rome it's an easy trip from there. Where they go would also depend on their interests. There's definitely more to do in the Amalfi Coast region. If they are looking more for hiking, swimming and just lazing around, the Cinque Terre is still great for that. If they want a little bit more to see and do and more of a lively atmosphere, I'd go with the Amalfi Coast. They can also then take side trips to Capri and Pompeii.

The Lake Como would give them water and mountains with lots of choices for accommodations in various towns.

The Amalfi Coast is my favorite seaside area.

I think Zoe has a good idea. The lake country is a great alternative depending on time of year. Lots to do and see. Como, Maggiore, even Lago di Varese and the smaller lakes.

Michael,
We love the CT and have been there three times: 2010, 2012 and 2013, always in October. We will go back again next year, God-willing. While some parts can be crowded (Trail 2) we gravitate toward the less crowded experiences: the higher trails, for example, or day trips to other towns outside of the magic 5. Fall is certainly less crowded than summer. It depends on what your friends like to do. Avid hikers can certainly get away from the conga-line crowd on Trail #2. Even crowded it is a special place, and those sleeping there do get the advantage of quieter evenings.
