Is October a good time to visit? Are there plenty of rooms available?

I would say yes and yes. Most of the summer travelers are gone. It will be cooler with possible periods of rain.

CT in October is great. I can't speak for late October but in early October the weather is warm, but not hot, and not much rain.

Since my wife and I are also going to be in CT in mid October, we too hope weather is good. Layering and light-weight rain gear also seems reasonable.

During the last years October has been quite good. You stil can swimm if sunny and it's ideal for hiking.
For the accommodations it's still pretty busy and so it's recommended to book in advance.

A number of travelers posting here have found that October in the CT can be a transition month with mixed weather.

A quick check of hotels in Vernazza show lots of openings in October.
