Cinque Terre

Hi everyone, I will be in Cinque Terre for 4 nights at the end of September and have a few questions I would appreciate your feedback on. 1. Does anyone know the situation with the hiking paths between the villages? Are they open now? 2. Other than exploring Cinque Terre - any suggestions for towns/cities closeby that you would suggest we explore? Grazie!! So excited to be going to this beautiful area of Italy! Warmly,
Prem

Three days is a lot for 5 Terre. You will have lots of time to hike.

Prem My wife and I will also be going to Cinque Terre in early Oct. Have not been to the area before. If you have any good info, please let us know. I understand the roads to the south are in bad shape and driving in from the south is difficult. Thanks in advance for any input. Our email address is: [email protected]

Steve, I suggest that you remove your email address from this and any other public boards. Get Prem to PM you instead.

I understand that the paths are all open now. The only two towns that were really affected were monterosso and vernaza. If you look into Rick Steve's blogs, he talks about them. Great area to visit. We will be there sept 23 to the 26 ourselves for the third time. Where are you staying?

Prem, Just to clarify, two of the four Sentiero Azzurro (No. 2) trails are still closed, and there's no word yet on when they'll be re-opening. The trails from Monterosso to Vernazza and Vernazza to Corniglia are currently open. The Via dell'Amore will supposedly be closed for the remainder of this year. The website provided by Robert in the third reply has the most up-to-date information AFAIK. Other than the five towns of the Cinque Terre, you could take day trips to: > Porto Venere (easier if the boats are running) > Levanto > Santa Margherita Ligure & Portofino Keep in mind that you'll only have three days, so won't have time for a lot of day trips. Be sure to pack some rain gear, "just in case". Happy travels!

We just returned from a trip at the end of May and the trail from Vernazza to Monterosso was open. Which is truly the most fun trail anyway ! Watch for the farmer selling limoncello bottles for 5 euros as you come into Monterosso - he was a delight ! The trail from Vernazza to Corniglia was closed, but hikers were traveling the trail anyway. You can easily spend a day hiking and taking the trains into each of the 5 villages. Another day can be Santa Margherita and Portofino (because they are SO different) and/or Portovenere. And definitely use the train instead of having a car. We rented our car in La Spezia to travel down to the Umbria and Tuscany regions after our time in Cinque Terre.
