I was thinking of going from Rome to Cinque Tette for a long day trip. Possibly snorkeling off coast or spending day at Vernazza or into a vineyard. Any suggestions?

One way from Rome to CT will take over four hours by train. It will be a very very long day trip.

kathleen, Travel to the Cinque Terre from Rome would be a VERY LONG day trip! As the previous reply mentioned, the trip from Rome to La Spezia is about 4 hours each way (add 15-30 minutes for the trip to Vernazza). I doubt that you'll have much time for leisurely "snorkeling off the coast or spending day at Vernazza or into a vineyard". It would be better if you could spend at least one night in the area, as the towns each take on a slightly different "character" in the evenings when the day-trippers have departed. Happy travels!

My suggestion would be to not go for a day- stay overnight or save the CT for another time. If you do decide to go, try: http://www.elisabettacarro.it/ in Vernazza.
