family of 5 M&D with 1-18yo and 2-10yo kids.
we will be in Italy next summer and dont know if we should spend 3 days in CT or in Sorrento....day trips?
PS:we will also be in ROME and Venice (3 days each).
If you're trying to choose a place between visiting Rome and Venice, go with the Cinque Terre. Sorrento is the other way from Rome.
I'd suggest basing your decision on the types of places and activities your family would most enjoy. Sorrento and Cinque Terre are very different, and both are just a bit out of the way when doing Rome and Venice. Sorrento is more of a resort town and offers a good selection of side trips - Amalfi Coast, Capri, Pompei, Naples. Travel time by train from Rome is about 3.5 hours. Cinque Terre's main attractions are hiking and relaxation. By train, it's about 4.5 hours from Rome and about 6 hours from Venice. If you're flying into Rome and decide on Sorrento, consider going there first and then doing Rome and Venice.
Its looking like we will fly into rome and stay for 3days. then down to Sorrento/amalfi for 3 days.
we then plan on driving up to Pizza and stopping in Parma for 2 days, then venice for 2 days then up to the alps. we plan on taking the train into rome and then car after that.
In May, we rented a car at Milan airport and drove from Bellagio to Paestum for 3 weeks. We absolutely loved both Cinque Terre AND Sorrento area. How tough it would be to choose! Visiting Sorrento right after you land in Rome is a good plan - and be sure to take the family to Capri for the day. When you head up to Pisa, you are very close to CT. We drove into Vernazza and parked at the lot high above town, and rode the shuttle. Your kids will never forget hiking the CT trail, or swimming in Vernazza's harbor, or seeing all the cats! We loved staying in Vernazza at both of these places: roommartina.it and caterinarooms.it ENJOY IT ALL!

Going to CT from Florence next month with wife and her mother, but can't find accommodations there (9/27-29). Tried both of the places you mentioned in your posting. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

Jim, etal. Get ahold of a guide book--the one by Rick Steves on Italy is excellent. Even one a year old is going to give you a lot of information. The CT has LOTS of lodging. A good guide book may be the best investment you make for your trip. And you can carry it with you. And you won't have to rely on all of us for the details of your travels.

I have never been to Cinque Terra, but we spent 5 nights in Sorrento in April 06. Sorrento is a resort town with a lot of charm. Side trips to Capris and Pompei would be great for the kids. We stayed at a B&B just of the Square called Palazzo Starace which was well priced. The Circumvesuviana Train is easy walking distance from the square.
Try Il Pozzo for dinner.
