Cinque Terra v. Amalfi Coast

Hi All,

Please advise me whether if I will be in Amalfi Coast (Positano) and Capri for 6 nights, I can skip Cinque Terra.

Thank you very much.

What/where does the rest of your trip take you?

I did a 3-week trip to Italy in 2015. There was so much to see in Italy, I decided to limit myself to one seaside locale, picking the Amalfi Coast over the Cinque Terra. I still feel that was the right decision for me, and I in no way feel cheated that I did not see CT. Hopefully, I will make it to see CT on a future trip.

We spent 10 days on Amalfi Coast and Naples. We stayed in both Positano and Amalfi and much preferred Amalfi. I think there is much more to do on the Amalfi Coast than Cinque Terre.

Hi,

Since your trip seems to take you to Southern Italy, the Cinque Terre is probably a significant detour for you. It really depends on the rest of your itinerary: for instance, if at some point you travel between Milan and Pisa, then yes, it is worth a night or two on the way. But if you are travelling between, say, Venice, Florence, and Rome, then no, not worth it!

Michael, ANY place can be skipped if it doesn't really work with the rest of the itinerary, isn't the right season for it, doesn't offer enough of the things you like to do, etc. Knowing a bit more about the rest of your trip and things you enjoy doing/seeing would be helpful?

That said, if the Amalfi Coast and Capri are the only destinations on your itinerary, yes, I'd absolutely skip the CT as the location doesn't work well with a trip otherwise focused on the A.C. region.

Month of the year affects both of these locations, as does your subsequent destination. For example, it's impossible to sleep in Positano the night before you fly home from Rome.

It sounds like you may not have researched daytrips from Positano. It's much harder to get to Pompeii from Positano than from, say, Sorrento. The two towns are not identical places to sleep in, however. If you're not going to Pompeii or Naples (as examples), then it doesn't matter.

And now that you've decided, here's my take. The Amalfi Coast has miles and miles of stunning views. The Cinque Terre towns are much more picturesque and more interesting to visit. They are very different. Beaches are "meh" in both.
