How long does it take (and typical cost) to get from Cinque Terra to Sorrento by train and would it be better/cheaper to fly?
You're going to have to depart from La Spezia, change trains in Rome, arrive in Naples, then change to the local Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento. You can count on 6-7 hours minimum by train.
Hi Michelle,
It is probably 7 hours...I don't recall what we paid but I remember being surprised that it was less than what I estimated...sorry not much help there.
I did the same train trip and we left on the first train out of CT to get an early start which I would recommend (also...FYI the first trains are typically delayed/canceled out of CT so just be prepared for that).
Just bring a good book and/or sleep. It's not that bad and the trip get's broken up when you transfer in Rome.
Have a great trip!
That is a long train ride. When I did it I stopped in Florence for couple of days before heading to Sorrento, which is something you might want to consider. Florence to Naples is a quick ride on the Eurostar. You are looking at 6 to 7 hours to from Monterosso to Naples and then another hour by train from Naples to Sorrento.
If you're willing to get up really early, you can save some money by taking an IC train directly from La Spezia to Naples. The trip will take about an hour longer than riding high-speed EuroStar Italia trains, but you'll save about 50% on the fare.
The first local train that stops in all the CT towns arrives in La Spezia at 05:22. The IC train to Naples departs at 05:46 and arrives in Naples at 12:36. For Trenitalia timetables and fares go here.
Circumvesuviana trains to Sorrento depart from Garibaldi which is the lower level of the Napoli Centrale station. I think the fare is less than 5 EUR. The trip takes about an hour. See the timetables here.
Michelle, we did exactly what Tim describe last September. We took the first train out of Manarola to La Spezia, it was still dark outside. From La Spezia with took the IC train all the way to Naples, than the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento. It was a long day, bring lots of food and water, a book, etc, and it will go fast. I did consider taking a flight direct from Genoa to Naples, but if you consider the train to Genoa, the extra hours for security etc, in the end it was not worth it.
Any chance you can stop mid-way for a couple of days? Maybe in Rome?
