This is a tough one for my husband and I to decide on. Need your feedback on this one. We will be in Florence a few days and plan on spending 6 days in Sorrento and Almafi but have two days in between to either go to CT or some hill towns. I have been checking CT hotels and looked into recommendations from RS replies and everything is booked. Found something, but prices are really high and not even great locations. We want to know if it's worth it to keep trying CT area or if Siena and Orvieto are good options since we will be costal the rest of the trip. Your thoughts?
Rebecca,
Given the circumstances, my suggestion would be to leave the Cinque Terre for a future trip, espcially as you only have two days.
Either Orvieto or Siena would be good choices to spend a few days, especially as both are somewhat "on the way" to your next destination, Sorrento.
If you decide to visit Orvieto, you might consider a trip to one of Rick's favourite hill towns, Civita di Bagnoregio. There's not much to do there other than enjoy the local restaurants, but it's such a unique location. The Duomo's in both Orvieto and Siena are also very beautiful. I was in Siena a couple of months ago, and it's a great place to relax, explore and enjoy the Gelato.
You didn't say what time of year you'd be travelling, but I'd suggest pre-booking accommodations soon, as those locations can be busy even in the shoulder seasons.
Happy travels!
Since you will be spending time in the Amalfi region, I'd say stick to seeing more of Tuscany using Siena as a home base. The CT is beautiful ( and also very crowded these days) but you can enjoy a similar experience in Sorrento. There are many opportunities for day trips from Siena with tours of the surrounding hill towns.
Kind of depends on what part of the year your trip is and whether or not you want to hike the trail between the towns. CT was very wet in May and, in fact, they closed the trails due to mud & rain.
I loved Siena and would go back in a heartbeat but also want to visit CT when the chance of the weather being better is an option.
Thank you to everyone. We will be departing Florence on September 2, 2010.
