Which is better Cinque Terra or Amalfi Coast in late Sept/early October
They are not the same. I would vote for Amalfi in the fall.
michele,
I agree with Frank, they're somewhat different so not really comparable. The Cinque Terre consists of five small towns along the Ligurian coast, while the Amalfi Coast has larger and more developed cities. Transportation is easy in the C.T. but can be more of a challenge in the A.C. For example, Positano has no rail connection so you'd have to go to Sorrento and then take a Taxi or Bus.
The food is better in Liguria. 😉
Which is better, apple pie or chocolate ice cream?
There is no wrong choice. Do one this time and the other next time
I liked both and joe got it exactly.
The Cinque Terre are extremely picturesque villages. The Amalfi Coast has stunning natural beauty. Some people like bananas, others prefer strawberries. You won't know which you prefer until you taste both.
Base your choice on your overall itinerary. Choose the one that is less of a detour for your itinerary.
Agree with all of the above. Another factor is the cruise ship crowds, which will still be going to CT in the early fall.
I've also seen cruise ships in Sorrento and other locations in the south. You may not be able to get away from cruise ship hordes on the Amalfi Coast either.
Yea I would do what Roberto advised & choose re. the rest of your trip itinerary. You can't go wrong with either. We have visited both the C.T. and A.C. each 4x now and enjoyed every visit. Have been to both places in the months of June, July and October. Of course the months of June and July are HOT in both places. Our last visit to the C.T. several yrs. ago was in early October and weather was beautiful. There may have been cruise ships but it didn't bother us. Re. the A.C..... We have been to A.C. 2x now in mid-Oct., most recently last Oct., and weather was beautiful. There were several days that cruise ships were in Sorrento as we could see them from our hotel balcony and they also bus people to Sorrento/A.C. from cruise ships docked in Naples. The day we took the boat to Amalfi town there was a huge cruise ship docked there and we had to wait quite awhile to get on the bus up to Ravello. That was a drag. The cruise ships usually leave about 6 p.m. First time we had been to A. town with a cruise ship in port and it does jam pack the area. Atrani is a quick walk through the tunnel from Amalfi and a nice escape from the crowds. Have a great trip!
One suggestion I'd make is to base in Salerno if you choose the Amalfi Coast. It's a surprisingly pretty place with a big sandy beach and it's much easier on the budget than any of the "Amalfi" towns and it has high-speed train connections to Naples and Rome, making it more accessible than the Cinque Terre. Salerno's at the "end" of the AC, so you can get buses and ferries at the beginning of their routes, rather than possibly encountering packed vehicles at an intermediate stop. From Salerno, you can also visit Pompeii by train and/or Paestum by train or bus
