After some great opinions and help from this board my wife and I have decided to go ahead to Italy in August. We are planning roughly 10-11 days. It is our first visit. Our rough itinerary is Venice, Florence, Cinque Terra, and Rome. My reservations are that because of the summer vactions cinque Terra will be mobbed. Maybe we should skip it in August. Any opinions are aprreciated.
I was just there in June and I would think August would be a good time to visit. CT is the place to be when it's a sunny day out, as there is very little to do when it rains. I spent 3 days and 2 nights there. Also August is usually Italy's slow time because most Italians take their Holiday in August.
If possible delay your trip until September. The CT will be packed in August. It is true that Italians take there vacations in August - meaning that not only will American, Germans etc be there but also plenty of Italians. I lived in Italy for several years and travel there often. September is the perfect month to go - great weather and far less tourists, along with cheaper prices in alot of cases. In 10 or 11 days you will not be able to do justice to all 4 places in your itinerary - cut it down to 2 spots.
If you have a choice between Italy in August or in September, go in September, early to mid-September is often ideal. This is because of crowds and heat: the one month can make a big difference.
