Cinque Terra Costal Trail

Does anyone know the status of the main CT hiking trail? The 2015 RS Italy book lists some of the trails as closed.

We hiked several of the trails last September with a guide as part of a day trip from Florence. I don't remember him mentioning any of the trails being closed. However I was likely busy taking photos or watching my footing instead of listening to everything he said. If you are a hiker or relatively active person it is something not to be missed.

Dennis,

If you're referring to the Sentiero Azzurro ("Blue Path") trails, parts of those trails are indeed closed, and will likely remain so for the remainder of the year. At the current time, only the Monterosso - Vernazza and Vernazza - Corniglia segments are open. The other two segments (Corniglia - Manarola and Manarola - Riomaggiore) are closed until further notice. The Manarola - Riomaggiore segment is the famous Via dell' Amore which is the easiest of the four trails (mostly level and paved), but it's been closed since September 2012 due to a severe rock slide which seriously injured four Australian tourists.

There's an extensive network of other trails in that area, so it's possibly to bypass the closed segments. However the other trails go higher into the hills so they're a more robust hike. The status of the trails can change at any time due to storm damage or other natural events.

Note that a Park Pass is required to hike the Sentiero Azzurro trails. You can easily buy that at the small wooden booths at the beginning of each trail segment.

As Ken mentions, there is an extensive network of other trails. We have hiked extensively in the area and only once on the Sentiero Azzuro. This site covers many of the other trails, for some of which you can take a little bus to the trailhead. Lots of options!

As Ken said, two of four segments of the Sentiero Azzurro - the one everyone wants to do - have been closed for some time but there are many others. Along with the info Laurel provided, here is the park's official website:

http://www.parconazionale5terre.it/Eindex.php

You can find trail descriptions and open/closed statues under Visit the Park > Paths and Outdoor. Clicking on any trail segment on the map brings up the trail number, and clicking "View the Itinerary" brings up more info such as length, difficulty and estimated hiking time.

The map also clearly shows which segments are closed (marked with red-and-white circles)

Just wanted to add the site above (first one linked not the official park trail) tries to guess at the timing of when the 2 trails currently closed will open but they are just guesses could be sooner or later for each.
I have seen those dates change numerous times over the past year and notice now they are saying April 2018 for both.

The Manarola-Riomaggiore (Way of Love) trail that is most popular they are doing in stages so depending on when you go it may be possible to walk part of it depending on where the construction is at currently. It definitely won't be a finished trail anytime this year though so you will be walking back the way you started for any redone portions.

At the present time, a short section of the Via dell' Amore is open from the Manarola end, but only as far as the small Bar (which is still closed I believe). AFAIK, they won't be opening any further sections until the trail re-opens fully (but of course that could change). The last information I've seen shows the opening date for the Via dell' Amore as April 2018.

Not sure how accurate any source is when it comes to these trails. The site telling us know it will be April 2018 was saying April 2017 only a few weeks ago and changes the times without any update as to why.
This site, which is an interested read shows how the construction is over 7 stages and they state whether accurate or not I do not know that another stage will be opened very soon ; or actually overdue to be opened.

" UPDATE:
The Regione di Liguria issues a press release pledging 1.5 million euro towards the Via dell’Amore project and promises another portion of the path will reopen before the end of 2015."

This other portion is in addition to the trail to the bar which had already opened at the time of this update.

Reviews of walking the tiny part of the trail to the bar that is currently open are very underwhelming so I would not get my hopes up for enjoying any of this trail if traveling any time this year.

But the sections of the 'Blue' between Monterosso and Vernazza, and Vernazza and Corniglia are open. Plenty of drama there (better have good knees). And lots of other trails, of course.

The dates may be changing because they've incurred setbacks in the form of heavy rain or falling rock. None of them are a sure bet depending on Mother Nature. I'm sure that the 'Blue' is having its issues as it was never meant for the amount of foot traffic it gets these days.
