alyce,

As you're also interested in shopping, Milan would be a good choice. Which of the five Cinque Terre towns are you planning to stay in?

The easiest trip will be to use one of the direct Intercity trains from Milano Centrale to Monterosso. Those have fewer stops and you won't have to deal with changes (unless of course your end destination is one of the other towns). The Intercity trains have compulsory seat reservations which will be provided with your tickets. You can check all the rail solutions at - https://www.trenitalia.com/ (you'll have to specify the name of the town you're staying in as "Cinque Terre" is not a destination).

It depends also on your origin city. Flights leaving later in the evening and not requiring a change are best. If you must change, flying into Pisa provides one of the easiest and shortest rail connections for Cinque Terre. For example, from Boston, we found the Lufthansa flight changing at Munich for Pisa to be the best overall. Consider the total cost of the trip, including the possible additional cost of a hotel and transportation on the outbound flight, when deciding on the flight routes.
