The local train stops at all the towns. Corniglia is up a hill but there shuttles too.

We stayed in Levanto rather than the Five towns and loved it. Great seafood restaurants down by the harbor. The train to Levanto from the south goes through the five towns to get to Levanto.

It is a park so a Cinque Terre card is required to ride the trains or use the trails.

You can just go back to the station from your hotel to get started by rail. There are many hiking paths in the hills behind the towns, and a main trail along the coast. By September the trails will probably all be open, but they do get washed out locally by heavy (winter) rains. Check when you are there beef you plan along hike. There are also boats along the coast as the RS CT show illustrates.

Have fun!

so we can easily train from Levanto back to each town ?? Best to start at southern end and work North ?? 2 towns per day ??

You can go in either direction. Makes more sense to go from south to north in case you get too tired, you will be closer to your home.
As far as how many towns per day, it all depends on your interests. The towns are small and easily walkable. You could tour them all quickly, or you could have leisurely lunches/dinners and admire the scenery.

We stayed in Levanto on an RS trip to see the CT. Perfect little town with several nice restaurants. We also took the train to the southern most town (bought a full day train ticket in Levanto) and stopped at each town. It was a perfect day - I would recommend it.
Since you have more than 1 day - you could spread out your visit even more.
(I love the CT and have been several times. - Only once on an RS trip)
