We will be taking the Best of Italy 17 day tour. Once it's over, we're heading south to a few destinations. Does anyone have recommendations for the Cilento Coast?
I don't know if Paestum is on the tour, but it is a great destination: Greek temples, Roman ruins, good museum, a beach and mozzarella farms.
Salerno would also be a good choice.
How much time do you have? Traveling by car or public transportation?
Zoe, thank you for your response. This portion of my trip is not a tour. We will be taking a train from Rome to Salerno, will get a rental car to drive to Calitri, will be there for a few days. Then to Seliano - will actually be staying at a bufula mozzarella farm. Pasetum is on the agenda. While there was considering checking out the Cilento Coast if I get good feedback on it. Then the plan is to return the car, hopefully get a ferry to Sorrento as our last home port to visit the Amalfi Coast.
It also seems car rental agencies in Salerno are not open on Sunday, so trying to decide how to handle that too.
Hi, Karen,
I found this article http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2009/aug/09/cilento-italy-amalfi-castellabate-acciaroli about the area - place looks stunning, and there's lots of good info. I hope you'll report back, if you do go!
I visited the area without a car, so I did not get a comprehensive look at the various towns, but Pisciotta was quite pretty. Along the coast, you can do boat trips that dip into grottoes. At Marina di Camerota, we took a boat ride into the park and walked back to town.
Inbsig and valadelphia ,
Thank you for your info. That website is full of good info. I will be back end of May...not leaving just yet...but will report back!
Karen
Hi Karen, I visited the Cilento Coast about 4 years ago. The Guardian article that someone has given the link for has good information. I would stay in San Marco (rather than the larger Santa Maria) if I went back. The hotel mentioned in the article is where we stayed - Hotel L'approdo - and I would love to go back. We had a first floor room which had a balcony and looked out over the harbour - since we went, there is now a spa at the hotel - it was a great find, really laid back and chilled. San Marco is small and was quiet, we went there in mid October, there are a few bars and cafes, tiny supermarkets and a great ice cream place about a 10 minute walk from the hotel on the main road.
From San Marco there are local buses to Santa Maria and to Castellabate. But you can also walk to Santa Maria along the beach (takes almost an hour) from San Marco.
There were lots of walkers in the hotel when we stayed there, we didn't have time to look into this but I believe that its a good base for some of the walks. We also went to Paestum and to Elea-Velia. Also a buffalo mozzarella making farm, and sampled their products (more ice cream) and cheeses.
Its definitely somewhere I want to go back to.
