Hi: We are visiting Venice next summer with our boys 9 and 11. We would like to sample some cicchetti one night... are kids allowed to do this too? I think the kids would get a kick out of it, since they love picking sushi from the "sushi boat" places here in SF. I just wasn't sure, since it says they are "bars" - not sure if kids are allowed. Thanks for the advice!
Kim
There are no age restrictions to enter bars in Italy. However alcohol cannot be sold or served to minors (under 18 years of age). It used to be 16 y.o. but the law has changed in 2012. Now you need to be 18 to be served or sold alcohol in Italy.
A "bar" in Italy is much closer to what we'd call a "cafe" than a "bar" in the US. They are very much family destinations, and are where Italians go to get breakfast, coffee, juices, and light meals, as well as harder beverages. While various forms of alcohol are served there, people do not usually go there to get hammered, particularly during the day. (Well, I'm sure there are exceptions, but I've never seen them).
They will fit right in. Did a cicchetti tour this past June and started at 6pm. The "bars" were relatively empty, and I think your kids would fit in just fine if you start before the drinking rush. Have fun!
