I wonder what is required to be able to witness the Pope give the Christmas Mass in person? Do I need to register or something? Asking for Christmas 2016, so I hope that's enough time in advance. Thanks for your help in advance.

You can request tickets from the Vatican 6 months prior to Xmas 2016. See more here http://www.papalaudience.org/easter-christmas-tickets
or per the Santasusanna.org website you can go this route:
"If you want to apply for a ticket for Christmas or Easter, you can contact the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan, at the Bishops Office for U.S. Visitors Office to the Vatican, Via dell' Umiltá 30, 00187 Rome, Italy. It is located at the Casa Santa Maria dell'Umiltà, one block from the Trevi Fountain. Their mailing address is:
U.S. Bishop's Visitor Office, Via dell' Umiltà 30, 00187 Rome, Italy
You can telephone them at Rome Tel. 011-3906-6900-1821 or send them a fax at FAX: 011/3906/679-1448"
If you are Roman Catholic, you might check with your diocese as archbishops can acquire tickets for personal distribution.
Regular bishops can help, too (an archbishop has charge of a larger diocese).
