Christmas in Paris and New Years in Rome

My husband and our 2 daughters and son-in-laws will be traveling to Paris for Christmas and Rome for the New Year. Any suggestions for holiday sightseeing? Also We would like some ideas about apartment vs hotel in Rome. Thanx
