Christmas in Milan

What's the best way to spend Christmas Day in Milan? I will be arriving that morning from the US.

I'm guessing just about all the shops, restaurants, and sights will be closed. I was considering a day trip to Bergamo, since it looks like an interesting place to wander around even if everything is closed. Would this be a good idea with a 30-40% chance of rain and cold weather?

Also, where will I be able to find food? I have no problem with eating from a supermarket, even for dinner, but will anything be open?

I will be in Milan for almost 3 days, so I'm in no particular rush to see all the sights. I'm just worried there will be nothing to eat and nowhere to go on Christmas.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide!

Given jetlag coming from the west coast, plus everything will be closed in Bergamo versus Milano, I would advise you to stay in Milan. There should be some restaurants open, especially around the Duomo, or your hotel can suggest something. The Duomo is open until 7:00 p.m., as they have services. Enjoy Milano on that day as it may be the only day of the year where silence reigns!

Mike,

I reluctantly suggest this, but if you're staying near the Duomo, there are several McDonald's in the area, including a large one inside the Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele. I'm not sure which (any) of them will be open on Christmas day, but they may be open while the more "traditional" restaurants will likely be closed.

Another option might be to check the restaurants in larger Hotels, as even on Christmas they'll have to provide for their guests.

Happy travels!
