My family has been invited to join some friends in Italy over the Christmas holidays. But we (and our friends) do not know where to spend the holidays in Italy. Any suggestions?
Rome would be the logical choice especially if you happen to be Catholic.
I always think Venice is magical at Christmas (if you don't mind the cold!) Naples is festive too.
We loved the Dolomites this past December- the snow was magical and there is some Germanic influence in the Christmas markets.
Verona is nice for a couple of days. They have a great christmas fair during the season. And in the Arena is always some sort of nativity showcase. One year they had a nativity set from a bunch of different countries (like over a hundred if I remember right).
I dont' recomend Venice for Christmas. Way too cold.
Siena is nice though
I spent last Christmas week in Rome and it was wonderful. Walking to midnight mass at Santa Maria Maggiore while the church bells all around played Adeste Fidelis is something I will never forget-and I'm not even catholic.
