We will be flying into PISA the week before Christmas and returning before New Years. We would like a leisurely journey with time to enjoy the culture and the Christmas season. Would it be best to stay in Tuscany, CT, Venice or go South for better weather?
We spent Christmas in Italy last year and had a wonderful time. We were in Sorrento for a week, Tuscany for 10 days and Rome for the Ephiphany. Tuscany while not cold by northeast standards felt very cold. Sorrento was warm and beautiful at Christmas and Rome's Ephiphany celebration on the sixth of January was fantastic. The parade and the Christmas market and the manager scenes were worth the trip alone. The weather in Rome was warmer than the Pisa area but you still needed a jacket. This was also the sale season in Rome when the stores are allowed to have their sales--special buses took you to all the shopping areas and the shops and stores were open very late by our standards. We loved Italy at Christmas.
Pass on the CT that time of year. Rome, as noted, is full of activity, as is Florence.
