Christmas In Italy

We want to spend Christmas in Italy, could anyone recommend what might be a good area? We are thinking Rome or Florence.
Maybe a Agriturismo?

Arrived in Rome right after Christmas through Jan 3. It was PACKED , MOBBED, crowds of tourists, mostly Italians. Could hardly get across the Piazza in front of the Pantheon. It was like Times Square which I loathe.
Christmas lights were so pretty, small and delicate.

I would stay in a town or city for Christmas, not at an agriturismo. What is your whole itinerary and will you have several days in whichever location you pick for Christmas? I ask because if you want to see some sights the afternoon of the 24th and all day the 25th are quite closed down except for restaurants.
