Our Rick Steves Tour in Italy will end on Dec. 24 in Rome. What can we do on Christmas day, assuming all restaurants, etc. will be closed? Does anybody have experiences and suggestions as to what goes on in Italy at this time? Closures of museums, etc??
Museums are closed and all of the outdoor archeological sites. Some restaurants are closed but not all, we had no problem eating all day. The churches are all open, although some may close periodically during mass. We spent the day wandering around Rome, looking at art in churches, going to the Christmas market, and watching people parade about Rome in their best clothes (more fur, jewelry and designer clothing than I've ever seen in one place). There is more than enough to do in Rome on Christmas, fear not!
Our experience in Rome was the same as the previous post. We had a great day. We also attended a service at the Santa Sussana (American) Church - even though we aren't Catholics, which probably added to the "Christmas" aspect of it all.
