Christmas Holiday

Which city would be better to spend Christmas in, Venice or Rome? Why?

I did Rome a few years ago and LOVED it & I'm doing New Year's in Venice this year. As for Rome: The whole "Christmas" thing is pretty obvious, you don't have to worry about flooding and the crowds can be more managable. Rememember to check for earlier closing times and Rome is much cheaper. PS Try the Crosti Hotel (Via Castelfidardo 54/00185) Decent location, can walk to most sites, KILLER breakfast buffet -they own a great restaurant down the street- currently only $115Db thru Expedia! Ciao!

Vote for Rome over Venice for a number of reason. The weather could be worse, and if it is bad, Venice is miserable. On the water the it would be more humid and the cold would be colder.

Thank you so much. We are planning a visit over the holidays and since we have not been to Italy we are looking for some guidance. You have been so helpful... Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Could you tell me what you like about Venice at Christmas? Places you go, church services you attend? where you stay? Thank you!

Paula, I spent last Christmas and New Years in Italy. Be aware that the days are shorter. Dec 26 is a holiday, and many shops will be closed. I spent Christmas in San Gimignano. It was magical. Many shops were closed for the season. Spent New Years in Venice. Absolutely spectacular!! It was a little chilly in Venice, but came prepared with my rainboots in case of flooding in the square. Enjoy.
