Christmas Eve Dinner in Rome

We are going to Rome for Christmas and looking for a restaurant for Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Day lunch. We are staying in Monti, but restaurants can be anywhere in the city.

Someone from Rome will have to respond but we were in Seville during the same time period, literally everything was closed. The restaurants in big hotels were open but packed with tourists. Our tour guide the day before recommended that we lay in a supply of food. Fortunately out hotel had a rooftop garden area with tables so we we had a couple of picnics. For Rome I am guessing the majority will be closed but some will be. When we were in Germany all the beer halls opened and that is where the action was on Christmas day. Good luck.

When we lived there, there were many restaurants open Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The Ghetto, in particular, is wide open but you must reserve. Since we have been gone some time I am reluctant to make a recommendation but the stalwarts in the Ghetto (check Rick Steves’ book, Google Maps reviews, other guides) are worth exploring. I would reserve 3-4 weeks in advance. If you cannot do it yourself, have your hotel do it.

When we were in Rome for Christmas a few years back, we ate at the following:

Osteria dell'Anima (near Piazza Navona)
We didn't make reservations. We happen to pass it walking home around 11:00pm after the mass at St Peters. Meal was memorable both for food and local late night atmosphere.

For lunch on Christmas day, I made reservations at Al Picolo Aarancio (+39 06 6786139). It is a well known place about a block from the Trevi Fountain.

I would highly recommend making reservations for lunch and dinner both and Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Otherwise, you will have a very hard time finding a place to eat.
