We're going to Rome for the holiday season, staying near St. Peter's so we can go to Midnight Mass. Are there any other special 'events' we should go to during this time of year? Any suggestions for New Year's Eve? We're an older couple and are on a fairly small budget. We're not into expensive dinners and gala type events, we prefer doing what the locals do.

I'm assuming Rome is like Florence area, so restaurants usually take reservations only for Christmas dinner, maybe e-mail your hotel and ask them to make reservations at a low-mid price restaurant? Not sure about NY Eve or Day, ask them!
