Criterion has released the full, 4-part version of this movie. The original 1979 film was of course, inspired by Turin-based artist/writer Primo Levi's memoir of the same name. It is really worth watching, even with its now slightly-dated production values (a sinister darkening filter covers the top half of outdoors shots) and somewhat slower pace. Those travelers interested in the Basilicata countryside circa 1935, will appreciate this cinematic triumph. Its honest representation of local culture, its portrayal of the blind allegiance of some to Mussolini, and its depiction of what actually happened to political prisoners in exile, make this movie indispensable.
The soundtrack includes some authentic folk songs. This DVD would make an excellent gift for the Italy enthusiast in your life--know any?
