Choosing Among Small Cities in Tuscany to Visit on Day Trips

Trying to narrow down list of small towns to visit in Nov/ Dec. this year. Planning to stay for a day or 2 at most and will be taking a train or car to arrive there. Any recommendations central Italy towns including towns proceeding southward to Rome. Will initially land in Milan , go to Padua and then southward.
Thank you for your feedback in advance.

Do you mean day trips or overnight stays?
Your question is not clear

Not many of the small towns in Tuscany have train access
Florence, Siena, Cortona, Lucca and Arezzo do
All worth a night or 2

Orvieto is actually in Umbria but a beautiful hill town worth a night or 2 and right on the train line to Rome

I’ll be staying overnight for 1 night mostly. Have been considering Arrezzo, Cortona and then other suggested towns. Was hoping to take train or bus to small towns in Tuscany & Umbria.
At this point in time trying to narrow list of towns to not miss. Planning on stopping in Orvieto before I eventually get to Rome over a 20 day period. Thanks for any further feedback.

November, December time frame I would look towards Florence, Siena and particularly Arezzo as they lean heavily into the Christmas fairs and displays if you are there late enough in the year.

I generally will only stay somewhere for one night if it is logistically necessary - like flying out the next day. A one night stay doesn't even allow for a full day in a place as you have a partial travel day, luggage, checking in and then the reverse the next day checking out, luggage, and a travel day. If it is possible to stay 2 days somewhere like Florence and do daytrips or stay in one place overnight to get a full day there I would recommend it.

My $.02, have a great trip,

My 2 cents would be to make one town your home base and take day trips out from there. I’ll be there in November, and will be making an agritourismo near Pienza my base for a week, and taking day trips out from there. A car is really helpful in that region, so I’ll be renting one at the Florence airport and dropping it off before my final 4 days in Florence. As Rick says, and I completely agree with after several trips, “one night stands” are extremely tiring, and eat up a lot of precious site seeing hours when you have to check in and out of various places. Have a great trip.
