Unfortunately we cannot get to Volterra (best Estruscan museum as I've read), but we will be in Cortona and Roma. My research says there is an Etruscan museum in both places - Villa Giulia in Rome and MAEC in Cortona. In case we don't have time to see both of these, which do you think is the better one?
Cortona museum was small and insufficant.
THe Villa G in Rome nice but still not to the level of what I expected. I think it may have been in italian only. Betw the two, my vote is in Rome.
Cortona's collection is smaller than the museum they've built for it. You could see it in half an hour.
I've only been to the one in Roma - enjoyed it very much. I spent about 2.5 hours there, the villa and gardens are lovely too.
If you can get to Chiusi, not too far from Cortona, there is a very good Etruscan museum there. In addition to seeing the artifacts, you can sign up for a tour into the nearby tombs.
If you are in Rome and want to discover Etruscan art and history, go to Tarquinia (1 hour by train) and visit the Necropolis and its Etruscan museum in the city centre and you will get a full sight of what the Etruscan people was about.
Really wonderful.
