I'm looking to travel in July by train from Rome to Siena and notice that several options have a stop over in Chiusi to change trains. Instead of doing the shortest possible transfer, we could take additional time between trains to visit sights in Chiusi (Etruscan museum?) although this would take away time from being in Siena. Has anyone done this and can offer an opinion? Thanks!
The train stops at Chiusi Scalo (Scalo means Port of Call or Railway Stopover), which is a newer town near but not really walking distance from the ancient town of Chiusi. You can check the museum, if you want, but you will need to find arrangements for your luggage (there is no luggage storage at the station as far as I know), then take the bus (or taxi) to Chiusi.
Thanks for your reply! I looked and the station is Chiusi-chianciano Terme but it does not have luggage storage so that would be a pain. Station looks to be a 30 minute walk or 10 minute bus ride from the museum but I think that we will skip and have more time in Siena....
Skip it - it is more of a hassle. Spend the time in Siena.
Chiusi area was our home base where we were staying at a farm house. We had a car. The train station is not near anything. I didn’t see anything in Chiusi that was worth spending time there, and I’m always on the lookout for cool stuff to see. Granted we were on our way to Florence when we took the train. So the focus was Florence.
Ovierto isn’t too far from Chiusi. Does the train from Rome stop at Ovierto? That would be a fun stop if it works.
