checking bags to Italy

We're traveling to Rome November 14, 2024. The first leg is Pensacola, FL to Miami on American. Then we go Miami to FCO on ITA. We come back from Rome to Miami on November 21 and return to Pensacola on November 22. Will we be able to check our bags through from Pensacola to Rome on November 14 even though we switch airlines?

thanks

unfortunately for us, it is on separate tickets.

Then, no, you won't. You'll have to collect them in Miami and check in with ITA.

Ok
I’m not sure but American may have an agreement with ITA
Ask at the check in desk and then make sure bags are tagged thru to Rome if it’s possible

You will want to have a printout of your itinerary handy. If AA is willing to tag the
bags all the way to Rome, they will want proof of your itinerary and flight #'s, etc.

ITA is in the same alliance as Delta. If you have the flexibility to change your flight
from Pensacola to Miami to a Delta flight, the chances of being able to tag your
bags all the way through, even if two separate tickets, will be higher. The bad
news is that Delta has no non-stop PNS-MIA.

On the return, you have to pick up your bags in MIA no matter what and manually
recheck them for the last leg, but this is normally done right outside the intl baggage
claim area and is no big deal.

Thanks very much for checking on this. As you say, there is no direct Delta flight to Miami (and that's how we wound up on American).

ITA is part of the SkyTeam alliance, along with Delta, Air France, and others. American Airlines is in the One World Alliance. It is highly unlikely American can check your bag through to Rome. You will have to go “landside” to baggage claim at Miami and pick it up, then check bags again with ITA for transport to Rome.

Note that "codeshare" agreements, where airlines sell tickets on other
airlines flights with a different flight number, is not quite the same as an
"interline" agreement.

If you can see a flight option that includes your two flights as one ticket
(which means there's an interline agreement) then there's a chance you
can check the bags through, even if you have two separate tickets at
this point.

But, I agree with everyone else that the possibility of this is low. I don't
see your flights on itasoftware as a connection option, which probably means
no go.

However, you might want to take a trip to Pensacola Airport before your trip and
ask the AA agents in person if they as a matter of course can do what you are
asking. If not, well, at least you know for sure upfront.

I hope you left enough time to make the transfer in Miami.

Concur with that.

Appears OP will have to retrieve, re-check and go through security both ways going through Miami.

AA can't tag the bags to Rome and ITA can't check the bags to Pensacola

The OP would have had to retrieve bags on the return regardless of whether or not the two airlines would interline bags. Miami is where immigration and customs will take place upon the return to the US.

Thanks for your help everyone. We should have plenty of time since our flight from Pensacola lands at 1:40 and the flight to Rome doesn't leave till 7:50
