I am flying through Rome from NY. I have a very long stopover. Do I need to pick up my luggage and keep it with me for 17 hours and then recheck it? Or can I trust the airline to send it on the next leg of the trip?

So I finally got a human on the phone. She said if the stopover is longer than 8 hrs I have to take the luggage with me and recheck in before the flight to tlv.
