I just printed our boarding passes for Lufthansa, traveling to Italy tomorrow. We have all carry-on baggage. Do we still need to check in at the desk?
If you have a boarding pass, you are good to go!
With Lufthansa, even when I’ve checked in online and a digital boarding pass was issued, they still required going to the airport counter to verify your passport and hand luggage weight.
If you have your boarding passes you should be good to go. Normally in the US they will not issue you a boarding pass if they want you to check in at the counter. We have had them call us up to the gate to check our passports when going from domestic to international.
I just looked at the boarding pass and it does say to check in at the counter. Does anyone know how strict Lufthansa is on the carry-on bags? It says 8 kg which is 18 lbs. wWe also have the day packs, which I’m hoping will be the personal article.
My experience with them is that they tend to be pretty strict. It may depend on day and week but I seem them frequently, more so than others, weigh carry-on bags.
Limited experience, but yes strict about weight. We had to do some shuffling of items between bags.
Thanks. We’re prepared for that. Funny that they don’t take into account the weight of passengers! I weigh about 125 while my hubby weighs close to 200. Not fair!
They don’t say they weigh the personal article. Just refer to the dimensions. I’m wondering if my hubby’s backpack will be OK. It isn’t huge.
The last time I was in line they weighed everything -- carryon and personal.
It's also been my experience to be called to the counter at the gate to verify passport, but you can get through security with a boarding pass.
It has also been my experience that LA is strict about weight requirements on carryons.
Yes, they will weigh your carryon.
If it's even slightly over their preferred weight , you will have to pay for check in.
Happened to me on my last trip home from Florence.
I had wrongly assumed that my carryon bag coming over on Air Canada, which was fine for size but quite heavy, would be the same for a Lufthansa flight home booked on the same ticket.
Not so...they were not happy, but after a bit of discussion, they let me check it for free.
They cared about weight, not size; AC was the opposite.
Double check for each airline!
I travel with only a roller suitcase as the carry-on and a shoulder bag which is similar to a student’s book bag, as the personal item. Because Lufthansa will weigh the carry-on which has a 8kg limitation (17.6lbs) I shift heavier items into the personal item which, in my experience, they do not weigh. And your point about them not weighing the passenger means that I take a khaki flak jacket made for photographers. It has dozens of pockets I can shift more of the weight to if need be to pass the weigh-in at the check-in counter. A windbreaker with zip pockets can also work. My jacket can easily hold about 8 pounds of weight. For the third item they allow you to take onboard, I’ve used a large plastic duty free shopping bag to stuff any remaining bulky items into.— shoes, sandals, and sweaters. Not once has the airline weighed a duty-free or large shopping bag, or even seemed to notice it.
After all the games the airlines have played to effectively add revenue by adding baggage fees, there’s a way to play the game by your own rules and win!
