Check out Uniontelecard.com. I bought a $5 "Mega Stable" card and that $5 gives you two to three hours of calling time. I've already used it and the clarity of the phone call is awesome.

Skype is great. I bought $10 worth of time a couple of years ago and am still some time left. Calls to Italy are inexpensive and the quality is quite good.

I was also wondering about using phone cards in Italy. My question is, once you plug in all the numbers, what if an operator comes on and speaks Italian? I do not speak Italian although I will have my phrasebook and have been learning some. However, when in Mexico, I tried using one of their cards and had difficulty because of the language problem.
