Cheaper to wait when buying train tickets?

I have been booking tickets for my December trip to Italy but have noticed for the later dates that there are no 'low cost' tickets available. But when I look on the month of October there are plenty of low cost options. Is it because December is more expensive or should I wait longer to pre purchase my tickets? I have been using the Italotreno website. Thanks in advance.

Where in Italy are you going?

Perhaps you should check Trenitalia.com

If you’re planning to take freccia (high-speed) or Intercity trains, you should be able to find some discounted tickets now. The longer you wait the more expensive these tickets will become.

Regional train tickets don’t change in price and thus there’s no advantage to buying these in advance,

Wishing you a wonderful trip!

First Italotreno is a private train with limited offering or at least less so than the national rail line. You should also be looking at trenitalia - the national railroad. The number of discount tickets (Super Econ and Economy) available per train is set when the tickets are released. Once they are sold out there are no more until the next schedule release - about every 6 months. The base ticket price is available from day one and never changes. The rail tickets do not have dynamic pricing that is associated with US airline tickets. There are three levels of pricing that are set the day the tickets are released and the price never changes. Also December is high travel times and the cheaper ticket will be sold quickly.
