THanks for any help Trisha :-)
Please define "cheap" in dollars or euros. Thx.
In Rome the termini and vatican areas are less expensive than the city center but they are not too far from the sites. You can try venere.com for hotels, b&b's or apartments in these areas. You can search by type and price. The reviews are written by people who have finished a stay so they can be trusted. Donna
For Florence try Hotel Bretagna, they're on booking.com. They have several room sizes with corresponding prices and when we were there in March 2009 we got a very reasonable price. In Rome we stay in the Termini area where we have found reasonable prices for Rome. You don't say how much is not so high so it's difficult to judge. You can search on booking.com and venere.com for rooms in those cities by your dates and requirements and then sort by price and get a good idea of where you might stay.
In Rome try the Panada near the Spanish Steps. My room had a double bed and a single. I do not remember the prince but we were on a budget and we were in Rome in July. The room was on the small side but it worked for us. It is a walk up but the location was so good that we loved it.
Have you bought the RS Italy 2011 book? If not, you'll want to. It's loaded with exactly this kind of information along with lots more helpful info that you won't get from individual postings on this board. Good luck.
Subject line of this thread: "Cheap Places to Stay."
Hooray! Finally, after hundreds of posts looking for the mythical "cheap but nice" lodging, we get an honest subject line here. The OP is hereby awarded the Honesty on the Helpline award.
cheap would be about 50-100 euro a night
We stayed at a place called Downtown Accomodation in Rome. It is close to the Colosseum. We paid 70 euros a night in 9/10. It is on Via Cavour, a main street. It was a bit noisy, but you could ask for a room in the back instead of on the street. They have AC and bring you breakfast in your Rome. Our room had one bed, but they might have other options.
Trisha - We stayed at Hotel Elite in Florence a couple of years ago. One of my travel buddies who was with me then just stayed there again in September and said it was just as it was a couple of years ago. It was basic but clean and had air conditioning. The people working in reception were really friendly and helpful. They made some reservations for us and even gave us some recommendations. You didn't mention your specific dates, but it's 90-100 Euros for much of May but some dates can be up to 110 Euros. There are 2 flights of stairs to get to the reception and could be more stairs to get to the rooms. www.hotelelitefirenze.com/EN
Just posted this is another thread but relevant here also: This is a handy list to start looking for the hotels in your price range: http://www.florence-journal.com/florence/2009/10/hotels-in-florence-for-under-150.html
I'm planning to go to Rome end of May, and I will be staying at Papa Germano hotel. It's neat the Termini train station. http://www.hotelpapagermano.com/
