There is a hostel in Sorrento, OSTELLO LE SIRENE DI SORRENTO, a 5-min walk from the train station. www.hostel.it.info@hostellesirene.com
I stayed there a couple of years ago and found it ok, especially since I had a 4-bed room to myself. It's very convenient to the train station and central bus connections to the Amalfi coast. According to Rick's ITALY 2008 rates are 18 Eu in dorms and a double with bath for 60 Eu. There is another hostel he mentions: Ulisse Deluxe Hostel, near Marina Grande, www.ulissedeluxe.com, info@ulissedeluxe.com. He describes this second hostel as "elegent." It would not be as convenient to getting around for daytrips as Ostello le Sirene, but it sounds nicer. Hotel Nice which is one block from the train station isn't great, but it's ok (I've stayed there). www.hotelnice.it, info@hotelnice.it. Db 85 Eu. I even had a tiny private balcony.

Central Sorrento is almost all within a 10-minute walk to the train station. Hotel Lorelei might take a few minutes longer, but has great views of the sea. I've stayed there, at the Hotel Nice, the Ostello le Sirene (hostel), and at Hotel Mignon Meuble. Lorelei is not listed in Rick's ITALY 2008, and I understand it has gone downhill since I stayed there in 2001. The others are all places that I would return to. The Mignon (www.sorrentohotelmignon.com) is the nicest. I had a single en-suite room a couple of years ago. Rooms are Db-105 Eu. No view, but good breakfast. It's about 5-10 min from the train station.

I stayed at Il Nido. My room was 50 euros, the place was decent, the people running it were very friendly, the beds were terrible, it's up above town with great views, they have a free shuttle that drops you off and picks you up in town (there is also a bus stop right across from the hotel).

I, too, have stayed at the Il Nido, but my recommendation would be much more positive than Jen's. Fantastic hospitality (family run); great restaurant right on the premises; very convenient shuttle bus service; clean rooms (I won't argue about the beds...they're just O.K.). Best of all - million-dollar views of the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius from your room. Price-wise, I don't think you'll do better. We'd go back in a heartbeat.

We stayed at the Lorelei (albeit 8 years ago) & loved it - rooms 14 & 15 have astoundingly beautiful views of the Gulf of Naples. Reasonably convenient to the Circumvesuviana, and the port.

But, of course, your mileage may vary.
