Looking for relatively cheap options ($40-$60/night) for lodging in Rome, preferably closer to City Center or Termini train station. My wife and I, 29 years old, prefer something more quiet/private. Thoughts?
Have you thought about a convent- or monastery-run accommodations?
I was looking at www.monastery.com for accommodations for a future trip. Some prices are either in or slightly above your budget. Some do not permit families for a quieter stay. You may find no meals offered, or 1-3 meals offered at a slight increase in price.
Check the website for locations. I am sure I saw one listed in.the Termini Station area.
Try the Beehive, they have a few different places in that area.
For two people, that's well below what convents typically charge in major cities. In Rome, around €50 a person is more typical, and some convents are markedly higher than that. I suggest you check hostels.
Slightly higher than your referenced budget, my family and I found what we'd consider a reasonably-priced hotel near Termini Station, located on via Torino. Hotel Rex is one of RS' Best Of Europe (Tour) hotels for its Rome leg, and we were able to secure a Triple Room for 112e per night. Not sure what their Double Room rate is, but it might be worth a Google search.
Yep. Beehive.
Next month I'm taking my 14-year-old grandson for his first trip to Rome. We have reservations in the convent Casa Il Rosario, centrally located just a couple of blocks north of the Forum of Augustus. The rate is 94€ for the two of us. I'll report back after our stay.
Yep, Beehive but even a double with a shared bath will run you over 60 euro during high season.
Thanks for the responses, I realized that my initial look at the Monastery pricing was per person, not per night! I'll check out beehive and hostels
Everytime I tried booking at places mentioned here in the Forum or in RS books, they were booked up for one to two years in advance.
So I found me an office at Via Milazzo 4/6 on the Via Marsala side of Termini that manages three hotels -- Mirage, Halifax, and Bed and Breakfast Caroline Suites, all directly across from Roma Termini, either on Via Marsala or Via Milazzo. Google the address now so you can see the area. Neighborhood is Cosmopolitan, busy and safe. Lots of ristoranti, Italian, Indian, Chinese.
Check the websites first so you know which price to ask for when you email for reservations. I've always asked for budget price and always got it. Great staff. Rooms are nice, big, clean, Good WiFi, Good TV, and maybe the best mattresses in Rome. Ask for a quiet room on the indoor courtyard, which is all quiet by 11 PM when the ristoranti end their day. If you face Via Marsala, the vendors come at 4 AM.
All guests meet for Breakfast next door to the office on the second floor (piano primo in Italy). Press #1 button to go up to 2nd floor. Breakfast is fresh-made caffe' to order, fresh Italian pastries, Italian deli meat and cheese, fresh-made toast (you make it), real butter, jelly tubs, fruit, pound cake, milk, juices, cereals, Italian-brand yogurt.

When you arrive at Roma Termini, walk to the big green Plus sign that marks the Farmacia, walk through that hallway flanking the Farmacia to the outside, carefully cross Via Marsala, walk a bit right to Via Milazzo, there is a caffe' shop on the corner and a vendor selling souvenirs. While everybody else waits for taxis, I'm the first one the dog sniffs as RS would say.
Three years ago we stayed at Stella's House a few blocks from Termini - like staying with an Italian aunty. Great price and convenient location if you're OK with shared bathroom and prepackaged croissants for breakfast (we were!)
Be very careful of Stella's House. Better to avoid it. PM me and I will share my personal experience there.
ct,
When will this trip be taking place? Room rates vary throughout the year.
THE BEEHIVE would be a good place to start, but they're very popular so you may have trouble getting a booking.
There are numerous accommodations in the area around Termini station but even at some Hostels the rates during peak season are above your criteria. You could also have a look at ALESSANDRO PALACE which is about an 8-10 minute walk from Termini (once you know the way). I've found the rooms there to be clean and comfortable (skip the breakfast though). Unfortunately a private double is currently priced at €110 per night in high season. If you could tolerate a four-bed Dorm, the cost would be €70 per night, as those rooms are priced on a "per person" basis. As I recall, Alessandro only accepts cash. Lots of nice restaurants in the area and a Laundromat around the corner.
I'm fond of the site EuroCheapo; here's their main Rome page: http://www.eurocheapo.com/rome/
Beehive or cross-pollinate.com--same company has lodging starting at 40 Euros. I have stayed at their places in a number of cities including Rome and like them a lot.
