I will be traveling on a very tight budget and want to spend one night near the Almalfi Coast (maybe Sorrento or Naples) so that I can get up and go to Pompeii the next morning. I will also be spending on night in Rome. What hostels would you recommend in or near any of those places? Thank you!

Check out the Ulisse Deluxe in Sorrento. I stayed in a double room (not dorm style) last September. It was very nice, good location, easy to walk to Circumvesuviana station to go to Pompeii. They also had an arrangement with local boat captains for tours of the Amalfi Coast and Capri. Here's a link:

You absolutely cannot go to the Amalfi coast without going to POSITANO, which is by far the best place to be in that area. Positano is the next town after Sorrento, going south toward Amalfi). Actually if you go to Positano, you might even feel like forgetting about Pompeii. I've stayed in a Pensione called Maria Luisa (Via Fornillo 42, Positano- Phone: + 39 089 875023). Basic but outstanding vista for a very cheap price. There is a bus that connects Naples to Positano from Piazza Municipio. It stops along the way in Pompeii, Castellammare and Sorrento as well. Another native is the Circumvesuviana Train (a commuter train) that connects Naples Central station to Sorrento (70 minutes from NA to Sorrento). Then once in Sorrento (the last train stop), you take a bus for the short 20 min. breathtaking ride to Positano (fasten your seat belts). To go to Pompeii from Positano, the next morning, you can either take the bus all the way to Pompeii (about 1 hour) or bus to Sorrento and then the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii. For Pompeii plan to spend at least 3 hours to see everything worth seeing (wear comfortable shoes because it's a big place and walking on rocks is the only option). For Rome, I usually stay at the Hotel San Remo, in via D'Azeglio near the station (for ease of transfer to the airport). It's Euro 80/night for single occupancy. Not bad for a 3 star hotel in Rome.
The bus ride from Sorrento railway station to Positano takes 50 minutes. Apart from the town of Pompei, Sorrento or somewhere like Vico Equense are the most convenient places to stay when visiting the Pompeii site
The Beehive in Rome is a wonderful hostel. Near to Termini, safe, clean, and affordable.
