What are your best hidden gems? Would like to know your favourite cheap(for italy) restaurant experiences
Alfredo's on Via Amadeo near Termini in Rome. Four of us at three courses with desert and four bottles of wine for $120 euro. So good we went back the next night.
Il Giova near the mercato Sant'Ambrogio in Florence - I love this place: http://www.florence-journal.com/florence/2006/12/trattoria_il_gi.html
Il Pirata Florence Miscelanea Rome Venice - No great ideas but found a couple wonderful shops for baked goods.
Ah yes, food, my favorite topic! Good-value restaurants in Rome abound - but since overpriced tourist places do too, you just need to know how to find them, and follow the locals... Some suggestions: Il Pommidoro, for good cucina romana in San Lorenzo and a meat/game-heavy menu, moderate to low prices: http://www.revealedrome.com/2010/10/il-pommidoro-san-lorenzo-cucina-romana-rome-restaurant-lunch-and-dinner.html Formula Uno, a cheap and excellent pizzeria in San Lorenzo, popular with students (that's how you know it's cheap!) Roma Sparita, for good cucina romana and pizza in Trastevere, which is a pretty district that can be loaded with pricy tourist traps: http://www.revealedrome.com/2010/07/roma-sparita-a-trastevere-restaurant-without-tourists.html Da Francesco, very good Roman food and pizza near Piazza Navona Nuovo Mondo, a super-cheap and great pizza place in Testaccio: http://www.revealedrome.com/2010/07/nuovo-mondo-the-best-pizzeria-in-testaccio.html Hope that helps! www.revealedrome.com

In Venice, Rick's recommended "Nono Risorto" was great. Fine pizza, calzone, good hours wine, nice salad, budget friendly. Garden setting couldn't be nicer, but crowded by 2000 with both locals and tourists. Go early.
