hi! was last in venice in 1969! going back this june. looking for a good, clean but hopefully cheap hotel, twin beds. Any suggestions? Thank you!
I recommend the Hotel Santa Lucia for low-end budget rates. Easy to find their website on Google. The lowest price hotels in Venice still have rooms that share bathrooms on the hall. The Santa Lucia stands out because the rooms are large, bright and clean. It is on a small alley near the train station with a friendly bar-cafe nearby for a morning cappuccino. I've had several private messages thanking me for the recommendation and confirming it's a great choice for staying in Venice at a very low rate.
How cheap is cheap? And when are you going?
Just stay in Padua, it is an easy and close trip by train to Venice and then you get a 2-fer--Venice and Padua.
Aaack! Stay in Venice! The best time to be in Venice is in the late evening when the day-trippers have left and you can wander the neighborhoods with the moon lighting the canals.
I agree with Doug. Staying in Venice is definitely worth it. Last summer with my group I stayed in hotel Albergo Doge. It was affordable, nice enough.
mary, You didn't specify your criteria for "cheap", but you might have a look at the websites for Albergo Doni or Pensione Guerrato. Both are listed in the Guidebook. In my experience, Venice seems to be a bit higher cost for lodgings than other cities in Italy, so you may have to "adjust" your budget slightly. Happy travels!
I stayed in Pensione Guerrato which is near the Rialto Market; it was about 90 euro per night (2 years ago, paid with cash) with two twin beds, and the bathroom was across the lobby. Tho our particular room only had a view of the "street" below, it was nicely decorated; and besides, we were just there to sleep anyway!
Very accommodating staff; you can leave your luggage there after checkout if you want to sightsee some more before leaving. They are one that Rick mentions in his Italy tour guide book, and I think he stays there himself at times.
Dear Everyone who answered my query about cheap, clean places to stay in Venice. Several of you wished to know what my criteria for cheap is: $100 or less/nite.
You have given me several suggestions for which I'm grateful. Mary
Alloggi alla Scala.
Hi Mary, We stayed at the Ca Zose (WWW.HOTELCAZOSE.COM) in the Dorsoduro area in February and a double room was 60euros/night with the bathroom en suite. It was very safe and right next to a traghetto stop so it was only .50euro to cross the canal to get over to the main island and St. Marks. It is very very close to the Salute church and Accademia Museum. We enjoyed it but it was basic - you won't find a lot of frills. thanks,
tracey
I just returned from Venice yesterday, stayed at Hotel Centauro, good location between Rialto and S.Marco, we paid 60euros/night for a double room with shared bath, clean and comfortable, helpful staff, would recommend.
You may want to look at Locanda Montin in the San Trovaso area. The restaurant that they run is very good but I have not stayed at their hotel. The rooms look basic and were cheap-bath may be shared but I think rooms are well under 100 euros. Seems like rooms are described as funky but clean.
Check B&B Dorsoduro 461, I'm staying there in May for 95 euros per night.
Check out the Rick Steve's recommended website www.cross-pollinate.com. We've used it several times for Venice & Rome.
Mary, You don't mention what time of year you are going. As you can see, staying under US$100.00 is not too hard during the off season. However, it would be quite difficult to keep to that budget in the high season. For example, a standard double at Hotel Ca'Zose in May is 150 euros - double the cost of a standard double room in the off season.
I'm booked in early June to stay at Alloggi alla Scala for 90 euro per night, double room with private bathroom. It was in my RS 2010 book and I see Rik has also recommended it so I hope it turns out to be good.
Thanks AGAIN TO ALL who wrote to give me advice! Yes, true, I didn't say WHEN I was going: sigh, it's right in JUNE! Full on "in season". The Alloggi Ala Scala, Hotel CaZose, and Hotel Centauro are already all booked up! I'm still checking on others. AND I do appreciate all of the help!
Mary
Hi Mary, we stayed at the Pensione Guerrato in Sept during the Regatta and that was high season for 90 Euro. Lovey breakfast and good coffee. It is a very local hangout. It was one of the most perfect times I have ever had. I loved Venice, I loved the B&B, the resturants they recommend were the best food ever. Have a wonderfuld time. Oh by the way the Air conditioning was wonderful.Good cooling system!!

Amy - the Ca Zose is really 150 Euros in May? Wow, it really does not warrant that kind of pricing - but I guess if they can get it - more power to them I guess?
@ Tracey -
Yup, according to their own website. You can save 5 euro per night if you prepay, but 150 is the listed price!
Does anyone else question the logistics of finding a "cheap" and "good" hotel in "Venice"? You can find a decent hotel, but cheap is truly in the eye of the moneyhandler for the trip, when they contrast the Venice hotels to comparable places elsewhere.
Once again, THANK YOU to all who are posting.
I've succeed in getting a double (twin) room for 75 euros/nite for June (no bkft)at the Hotel Santa Lucia. One of the gentlemen who posted suggested this place and it's well located and hopefully not a dive! All questions will be answered (soon!).
