Cheap(er) Train tickets!

Just wanted to give everybody a heads up....I bought my train tickets 4+ months ago.....I went on Italo, just to see how the cheapest fares were going, and they are even discounted FURTHER! A ticket that I bought in January for a decent 38 euro from Salerno to Venezia S Lucia is now like 18 euro! Just a heads up if anybody was holding out....

Also, many trenitalia tickets for may are STILL in super economy......

Italo is really promoting low fares lately so worth checking. They are still struggling as the State demands higher fees and profitabiity is elusive. They have cut staff. I think they are really in need of cash, hence the promotions. They carry a lot of debt, too. But it is a great ride and trains are fuller than I have seen!

Hi Katherine,
We are going to be traveling by train in Italy(husband/daughter/myself)Milan-Venice-Florence-CT-Rome. Haven't bought tix yet. Is Italo a separate train system than Trenatalia? Or is it just a different website to buy tix from? Also, first class or second class?? Just need clarification. Thanks
Michelle

it is a completely separate company than Trenitalia, Italo is privately owned while trenitalia is somewhat state run....

http://www.italotreno.it

it is newer, so hence a bit nicer, but 2nd class is fine for me....

Yep, Italo is a private company that offers service mainly to the larger cities, and very often has some attractive prices. We haven't used their trains yet but they're said to be very nice! Even on Trenitalia we aways travel 2nd class - unless there's a deal - and been perfectly happy with those carriages so I'd do the same on Italo.
