Cheap, Central Hotel in Rome

My husband and I will be traveling to Italy for our honeymoon this October. Looking for suggestions for a hotel in Rome for two nights. Centrally located to all of the sites and not expensive (no more than 100 euros) with private bathroom. Suggestions??

You might try Hotel Argentina, Hotel Marcantonio, or Hotel Cavour. They're all in the same building only five minutes from the Termini station. We stayed in Cavour and it was ok. The location is walking distance to the Coliseum and most of the sites. In checking them it seems only the Cavour is around your price range. You can check their website to see how you feel about it. Good luck.

There is no hotel that is central to all the sites. There is a city center that will get you close to most of the sites but this is the most expensive area and I don't know if you'll find something for 100 euros per night. You might want to check out venere.com. The reviews are from people who have actually completed a stay so they can be trusted. You'll probably need a hotel in the termini or vatican area. This are good areas to stay in as they are close to sites, transport and restaurants. Donna

I stayed at Hotel Italia, Via Venezia 18, on the recommendation of friends who'd been there. We were all most satisfied. It's a 10-15 minute walk (short taxi ride) from the train station, just off La Nazionale, 5 minutes to the metro, good bus service too. Less than 20 minutes to walk to the Colosseum, the Forum, and other sites. There is a supermarket across the way, good for picnic lunches or late in-room suppers, as they have lots of ready-to-eat choices, will make sandwiches, and have a great wine selection. The hotel has free wifi and AC (recommended for October in Rome).

"The hotel has free wifi and AC (recommended for October in Rome)." Quick note regarding Chani's comment about Hotel Italia (and pretty much any hotel where you see that they have a/cwhich IS a big plus for Romebut which also comes with conditions). Don't misunderstand a hotel that offers a/c if your trip is in October. If it is after 15 SEP, a/c is not likely. The general standard is 15 JUN to 15 SEP and all bets are off before/after that, regardless of any unseasonably warm temps. You might get lucky, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I've heard of people getting a/c both before and after the dates above, but more often than not, it's been disabled and/or the remote controls removed from the rooms and those who are unaware of the "rules" tend to complain loudly. The hotels who advertise and offer a/c aren't deliberately misleading you, it is just that WE are usually unaware that there are stipulations as to when the a/c is actually run (sometimes governed by local statutes) or to what temps the thermostat can be set, based on our Americanized hotel expectations. Wish I had a couple hotels I could tell you about. All my Rome "budget" choices (in other words, 2 stars with good location and facilities) are more like 125 euros or so.

I stayed at Hotel Katty in Rome last fall. It is as "budget" as I am willing to go. The building is old and has a cage-type elevator. The rooms have been remodelled recently and (as far as I know) are all ensuite. I used their free Wifi and enjoyed my stay. I got a 5% discount for paying with cash. There are numerous restaurants nearby, and a laundromat down the street. The hotel is northwest of Termini, about a 10-min walk. The Termini area may be less expensive than other parts of Rome. I never felt that the area was dangerous, even at night. The Metro and central bus station are at Termini, so it is easy to get around.

Don't forget to use Google Maps Streetview to take a peek around the area of any hotel you're considering. That little trick saved us from booking a hotel that sits right on top of a McDonald's. :-)

A/C in Hotel Italia is with a remote-controlled in-room unit. I was there in February and complained about the chill in the room, they gave me the remote for extra heating (no charge). Just ask them when you book if there is an additional charge for using the A/C. Even if they take another €10/night, the price should be within your budget.
