We are looking for an apartment or B&B that will accomodate 4 - 6 people in both Rome and Venice. We are also looking to spend 4 days or so in the Lake Garda or Dolomites. We will sacrifice amenities, but not cleanliness or safety. I can find little to nothing anywhere close to E100 a night. Any like minded travellers have a favorite they would like to share.
The big problem, especially for Rome and Venice, is that a 100 Euro/night for six people is VERY cheap. I think your expectations are a little unrealistic.
Frank, thank you for the input. I'm not married to that price range but it seems that throwing out a number to start with helps establish what a person is looking for. If we throw the E100 out what do you feel would be more realistic? Cordially, the turnip
Rather than a somewhat arbitrary number, look at some sites that include modest lodgings: Airbnb.com and Cross-Pollinate.com are pretty good places to start. Monasteries and convents may also offer reasonable options for you. I don't have the site handy, but I believe there is a site that specializes in accommodations with religious orders. Time of year, matters, of course. We had a great apartment in Venice in December for 90 euros per night, but it's more in other seasons.
Are you four people or six people? Have you tried vrbo.com? what time of year are you going? Off-season prices will be a good bit lower than high season prices. I agree that you should definitely bump up your price range after doing a little more research. Last year we stayed in an apartment right near the Campo de' Fiori in Rome for under 100E a night, and it had enough bed and sofa space to sleep six people, but it was tiny tiny tiny and had really low ceiling height. I would never recommend it for more than two people, but the guest book showed that four people routinely stayed there. Probably never to return. Good luck.
We are four for sure. Two more "really want" to go...
In Venice, if there are four of you, the possibility exists that you might be able to find apartments in the 120 to 170 euro per night range depending on when you are going. If you can book far enough in advance to have all the choices available , you could get closer to the lower range. for 6 people, you are probably looking at 200-250 euro per night in Venice.
Monasterystays and Santa Susanna are two sites that are helpful for, well, monastery stays. Sometimes a hostel can give your group a room or two for itself. 100 euro a night is about 25 each for four, not likely in Rome or Venice.
We will be staying in a 3 bedroom/3 bath apartment near the Spanish steps in May. It is an apartment that is run by Eva's Rooms B & B. We found it on www.easydomus.com- which has many apartments that would house 6 persons and some are quite reasonably priced.
And if you are planning on going in the warmer months you'll want air-conditioning which is usually "extra".
We're looking to go in late September/early October.
Late September to early October may be coats, hats and mittens in Minnesota, but it's still summer in Italy. I was in Venice in mid-October and needed to ask for a fan because the room didn't have AC.
Take a look at the website for the "Beehive" in Rome. It was mentioned in another post and I "Liked" them on facebook for s. It looks really cute and they have different types of rooms from hostel type to private rooms with communal kitchen and lounge areas and an outdoor patio.
Something like that might work for your group.
