Some friends and I are going to Rome in late April for 8-9 nights, including a night or two at the Amalfi Coast. I'm looking for cheap places to stay while we're there (cheap being 75 euro or $100ish a night total per two-person room). We're not looking for posh, just clean, safe, and as close to the historic city center as we can get for the price in Rome. Suggestions for the Amalfi Coast would also be great. Any information is greatly appreciated.
Erin, I would suggest checking out the Beehive if there is a group of you and perhaps you could rent out their dorm room. (Its not really near the historic center but it is a small hop from Termini). The place I have stayed several times in Rome is Hotel Cervia Roma. Not posh for sure but they are very reasonable, about 5 min from Termini but far enough away from Termini you lose some of the Termini "atmosphere"
Although not on the Amalfi Coast as such, the Ulisse in Sorrento ..... http://www.ulissedeluxe.com/
How adventurous are you? I have stayed at the family owned Le Palme in Amalfi. Their rooms start as low as 40 Euro/night (single). However, there is a catch. Their holiday house is located halfway down a mountainside amongst the lemon groves. It is 300 steps down the mountainside from the hotel located above, and another 656 steps down to get to the road to town. They will porter one bag down per person for free and additional bags for a fee. The accommodations are clean and the family very friendly. They own a restaurant in town and can have dinner delivered to you in your room...the most delicious lasagna I have ever eaten. The unobstructed view of the sea is to die for! http://www.lepalmeamalfi.com/index.html
You could begin your room search with venere.com and tripadvisor.com. Both sights will provide pricing, map locations, and client reviews. Buon viaggio, RB
Erin, for 2 travelers in most Rome B & Bs, 75E will cover it during the April time frame.
For the Amalfi Coast part of your trip try checking out SummerinItaly.com. They have many [INVALID]ions all over the Amalfi Coast, and have many sizes and prices of lodgings. We just got back from our trip last week and used them to find a perfect apartment in Positano. Everything was just as represented on their website, and dealing with the people at SummerinItaly made the planning very easy as they promptly answered all our questions and were very helpful
Easter falls on April 24 in 2011. That is likely to drive up prices in Rome. I have to disagree that 75E will cover it for most B&Bs in Rome. It's doable, but you'll have to work a little to find that low a price. Have a great time!
