Cheap accommodation in Bozen, Cortina, Ortisei

Hello,

I will be travelling the Dolomite region solo at the end of the coming June month for 4-5 days. I will be relying on public transport. I heard that during the summer time both the buses and trains run frequently. Below are my planned places-

  1. Lago di Carezza from Bolzano

  2. Lago di Braies from Bolzano

  3. Santa Maddalena Church and village from Bolzano

  4. Lake Sorapis from Cortina

  5. Seiser Alm + Seceda from Ortisei

2 days in Bolzano to cover all the mentioned places. If needed, will discard one of the lakes from the list. However, I want to stay 1 night in Cortina d'Ampezzo for my visit to the Lake Sorapis and the other day in Ortise for Seiser Alm + Seceda. Problem is that, in Cortina and Ortisei, the accommodation is pretty much high. Can't afford that. Want to know if there's any cheap accommodation/campsites/airbnb where I can stay at night to cover these places.

Many Thanks.

It's worth checking booking.com if you haven't already done so. In addition to hotels, it has listings for apartments and sometimes also beds in youth hostels. That area is much less expensive than the Swiss mountains, but that doesn't make it cheap.

I must warn you about the possibility of hot weather in June down in the valley (in places like Bolzano and Bressanone). It's not every day, but it happens more frequently now than it used to. Many of the less expensive lodgings are not air conditioned--or at least they were not as of 2015. If you're spending your sightseeing hours at altitude up in the Dolomites, you won't need to worry about conditions in the middle of the day, but if may still be unpleasantly warm when you return to your lodgings and try to go to sleep.

Thanks for the reply. I checked some of the airbnb and rooms are not that pricey. Suits me though.

The problem is relying on public transport. Since the public transport (specially buses) runs only in Summer, I can not go early either. Do you have information whether there the public transports around the mentioned places will be available before June ? If yes, then I will plan accordingly.

I was in the Dolomites in September. Bolzano is the most convenient place to stay if one relies on public transportation. However, this doesn't mean that you won't spend a lot of time waiting for and riding a bus.

Mind you, buses are often full in summer, even during the pandemic. I drove. I wouldn't have gone there without a rental car.

About cost--i too was shocked by accommodation prices there. It's certainly not a budget destination.

Be sure you understand how to get to Braies. You need a train to Villabassa (more likely two trains, with a change in Fortezza), then a shuttle bus or two. Wait for the summer timetable for plans. About 2 hours and half each way.
