Charming village in between Rome and Florence

Traveling with husband and two boys ages 8 and 10. Wondering if a two night stop at a charming village town in between Rome and Florence would be nice and if so, where to stop. Montepuliciano? Somewhere else or skip it and spend 2 days in concque terra instead? Any advice? Thanks!!

Traveling in early October and Will have car. Thanks!!

Orvieto is very nice. Has underground tunnel tours for the boys, a beautiful Duomo, and charm galore.

If you are driving, the area around Montepulciano and Pienza is beautiful. If using a train, Orvieto is your best bet.

I see you are working on your trip with your husband and sons. I little general information will help us provide better answers. When are you traveling? How long is the trip? Where will you be arriving and departing? How will you get around?

I'm assuming this stop is as you head up to Florence. Montepulciano would be a good candidate depending on your mode of travel. If you don't have a car, Orvieto might be more convenient. You can take a train from Rome and then from Orvieto to Florence. You can also take a bus from Orvieto, which may be fun.

Another vote for Orvieto. Montepuliciano would be ok too. Can't really go wrong with either.

A 1 1/2 hour drive from Rome makes a nice stop along the way.

Stay in Radicofani. Huge Star Fort. Beautiful village.

Day 2, visit Bangi San Filippo, “white Whale falls”.

Day 3, drive to Florence. 2hours. Park in the Villa Costanza area. Tram into Florence.

This eliminates any potential fines for ZTLs &driving in Bus lanes. It’s also the least expensive.

While we like both Orvieto and Montepulciano I think Orvieto with its underground caves, etc would be more appealing to young boys
It is only an hour or so from Rome so not really halfway to Florence. It is worth a 2 night stay.

I wouldn’t want to have a car in CT so probably not a good choice and CT is definitely not on the way to Florence.

As mentioned above Rome to Orvieto to Florence is so easy by train-that would be a fun experience as well

Car would be needed if you want to drive and spend time in the Tuscany countryside but it will only be an expensive headache anywhere else
You really don’t want or need a car in Florence!
