HELP! We are in Tuscany. Rented a GPS from AVIS, along with the car. Charge cord not working. Battery is down. My mp3 cord fits the Tom Tom. Do I need to use the converter box qwith the USB wall unit.
You can charge it through your computer using a USB cable with no problem. Not sure if you need the converter if you charge through an outlet. I used the standard 12v connection in the car, however, do it with the computer.
What if you don't have a computer handy to re-charge MP3 player?
There should be tags or embossing on each items which indicates input and output requirements. As long as those match, you should be ok. I would have some reservation about charging something that expected to be charge from a 12 volt battery. Might be easier or better to find an AVIS office.
Peggy,
I'm not familiar specifically with the Tom Tom units, but assume these are similar to Garmin Nüvi models.
It's likely that these use standard USB voltage levels for charging, so if your MP3 cable fits the GPS it should work for charging.
Before stating whether you "need to use the converter box", it would help to know whether you've been using the "converter box" for charging your MP3 player? What type of Charger are you using with the MP3 Player, and what are the "Input Voltage" ratings listed on it?
One final note - I'm able to use the Travel Charger for my IPod Touch to charge the GPS unit (although it requires a special cable with USB on one end and a smaller plug on the other end that fits the Garmin Nüvi units).
Cheers!
I'm sure you're aware that some vehicles must be running for the charger outlet to have power. Your TomTom charge cord will show a little green light if it's getting power. Be sure the car charger is firmly seated in the power outlet.
I know these things sound obvious, but what the heck. You never know.
Fredericka, go to a Radio Shack and buy a Wall to USB charger. Take it with you along with your adaptor plugs. I am charging my MP 3 using no convertor box with no trouble at all.
To the rest of you...thanks. We are at a Villa in Tuscany and do have access to a computer. Why did I not think of that myself. That way I do not need to worry about whether we need to convert electricity.
Just letting you all know that we DID charge the Tom Tom using the computer and the charger cord from my MP3. Although the wall to USB would have worked, I felt safer doing this. Luckily it happened when we had only two days left in Tuscany. We did not turn it on until we were almost at airport in Pisa for our flight home so it did not run out of juice. Told Avis that the charger cord was defunt and requested a 2.5 day refund and they actually gave us more than required!
Thanks for your help, everyone.
