Charging a Power Bank

I've not been able to search and see this question answered by anybody. I have a 16,000 mah powerbank that I hope to bring with me in May. I know that phones do not need convertors, jut adapters. How about these powerbanks? I have looked for the 110-240 sticker and it is not on the device. Just reads "Input DC5v/1a". Can I jut suse an adapter? Charge in a car?

swag,

Look on the charger for the Power Bank (ie: the part that plugs into the electrical outlet). The charger is the device that converts the 115 VAC to 5VDC to supply the Power Bank. Look for the words Input Voltage on the charger.

That makes sense but it did not come with a charger. Just USB cables. So maybe as long as the charger says 110-240 I should be fine?

If you input (to the "powerbank") cables are USB and its rated for 5 vdc it is probably intended to be chargeable from a lap top computer/tablet (or from a power source for a lap top). At 5 vdc and 1 amp, its only drawing 5 watts of power. However, you do need the power brick that convers 220-240 vac/50 hz to 5vdc (direct current).

You could charge from a car if your car has a USB port. If you plug into the cigarette lighter you could overload your device in that your car's voltage is 12 vdc and your device input is spec'd at 5 vdc. You would need a car lighter adapter that steps voltage down to 5 vdc.

yes - if you use a cell phone charger to charge the powerbank that should work fine in 110 - 240.

swag,

Could you provide more details on the Power Bank you're using (ie: brand name, model and other details). It would be easier to offer more specific advice with that information. What do you use to charge it at home?

Sure, thanks in advance for the help. It is a RAVPOWER RP-PB35 16000 mah. Did not come with a charger, just a couple USB cords, basically use any charger that is laying around the house (USA).

Specs read:
capacity 16000 mAh/59.2wh
Input: DC5V/1A
Output: DC5V, 1A/2.4Amax

The "powerbank" must be a rechargeable battery. If it charged at a 100% efficiency, the 16,000 mah battery would take 16 hours at a 1 amp input. Must take you at least a full day to charge a fully depleted unit.

PS for the safety of your fellow passengers, don't check Lithium ion batteries, especially a large one:
https://www.faa.gov/about/initiatives/hazmat_safety/more_info/?hazmat=7

Spare (uninstalled) lithium ion and lithium metal batteries must be
carried in carry-on baggage only. When a carry-on bag is checked at
the gate or at planeside, all spare lithium batteries must be removed
from the bag and kept with the passenger in the aircraft cabin. The
battery terminals must be protected from short circuit.

This also includes external battery chargers (portable rechargers)
containing a lithium ion battery.

Lithium ion (rechargeable) batteries are limited to a rating of 100
watt hours (Wh) per battery.

swag,

Thanks for the additional information. I'd suggest taking something like THIS Charger along on the trip, as that will allow you to charge both the Power Bank and a phone (or other device) at the same time. It appears to have a sufficient current output to power both.

You will of course need Plug Adapters appropriate to the countries you'll be visiting to connect the Charger. If you're only going to visit the continent, THIS model should work well. I'd suggest packing at least two, as they're small and easy to misplace. If you'll be visiting the U.K., a different model will be required.
